Taking On Winter's First Flakes in Style

Gilets and vests are on my mind right now.  They add warmth to any outfit and are easy to slip under a jacket.  On the coldest days of fall and warmest days of winter, they function as standalone pieces, no need for a coat to come between it and the rest of an outfit.

Yesterday’s winds blew in the first significant snow of the season, preceded by a mix of frozen rain and sleet.  I spent the day showing East Coast relatives around town, so I wanted to wear something that transitioned from indoors to outdoors with ease.  I’ve talked up my Belstaff vest before, and I thought it would pair well with my gray Uniqlo turtleneck and oldest pair of Baldwin denim.  The trio didn’t provide quite the warmth I sought, but I didn’t shiver or freeze.  Instead of having to remove layers every time I popped indoors, all I had to do was slip gloves off my hands and into my vest pocket.

The other nice thing about vests and gilets is that they’re easy to tuck a scarf in.  I swiped a vintage green Christian Dior scarf from my dad (purchased back when he was a young clothes-minded man like myself) that added a bright pop to the olive hue of the vest.  The two were pulled together by my navy Askov Finlayson Watch Cap, a purchase I made last winter despite my loathing of hat hair.  I do not regret sacrificing my vanity and past aversion one bit because I’ve granted my ears the gift of warmth - looking foolish in cold weather is never in style.
