Scarf Season
Yesterday was biting. The windchill was low and people bundled up in layer upon layer or avoided leaving the house altogether. Being the brave soul I am, I ventured outdoors in order to fulfill the duties of the day. Without my trusty green scarf, Jack Frost would have gotten the best of me.
I have two scarves I love above all others - a red woolen Scottish number that I swiped from my mother and a soft green scarf I swiped from my father. Though the former adds contrast to more of my wardrobe, I’ve enjoyed pairing the latter in a green-on-green combo with my sage Barbour Bedale lately. Plus, it’s easier to tie than heavy woolen counterparts thanks to the finer knit.
The green scarf is a Christian Dior piece dating back to the 1980s or early 1990s, when their men’s line was called Dior Monsieur (before becoming Dior Homme). I found it several years ago when digging through my parents’ scarf shelf, and the label and green hue caught my eye. I asked - of course - to take it, and I’ve worn it ever since. The bright green adds a dash of holiday festivity to my outfits without looking cheesy, and the weave is sleek enough to be worn indoors or dress up a casual ensemble. I wore it with a turtleneck and jean jacket to maintain optimal warmth and style everywhere I went, and it did not let me down in either department.
Scarves are an inexpensive way to add élan to an outfit. Some of my favorite modern designs come from Drake's and Stoffa. The former updates traditional patterns with superb material, and the latter uses color theory principles to create a dazzling array of products that pop against dark coats (much like the Dior here). Of course, Ralph Lauren and Begg & Co. always offer selections of beautiful scarves, and I've spied a few Barbour neck warmers at Nordstrom that I'd like to pick up. Another good place for scarves is eBay, where one can find an abundance of vintage pieces in good condition at a fair price. Regardless of where from, your neck will thank you for adopting the scarf as part of your winter wardrobe.
