Holiday Shopping: Debut

Amid the sea of chain stores at Mall of America lies the new North wing.  Though still dotted with fast-fashion brands, Zara seems more palatable than H&M (perhaps because of its novelty in Minnesota), and the soon-to-open Rustica outpost fills the pastry and coffee niche that myriad chain spots have failed to execute on a high level.  The new Naf Naf Grill in the third floor food court is also a place of happiness and fiery flavors.

Among these openings is Debut, a sparse yet welcoming pop-up that shows off the wares of American artisans.  The local flavor is undeniable - Debut offers a selection of Explorer Pants and fleeces from Askov Finlayson, and one can also find Minneapolis-made outdoor gear by Fisher + Baker and home accoutrements by West Elm LOCAL, the furniture chain’s partnership with community artisans..  Other American heritage brands make appearances as well.  Todd Snyder’s - one of the best casual brands out there for men who want to take a step up from J. Crew - latest collaboration with sportswear brand Champion is on their shelves and offers a series of rugged off-duty basics that Northern men would be wise to pick up before they sell out.

Durable Billykirk belts retail for $99, and are longer on quality than more expensive belts at nearby chain stores.  For those need a parka and wince at the increasing prices of Canada Goose’s popular models, Debut carries a curated selection of Woolrich which includes a parka - that’s not too poofy - for under $500.  While these are still premium items, they seem like a bargain compared to some of the mall’s more exorbitant offerings.

Going to the mall no longer has to be an ethical quandary.  Last year’s local holiday shop was the spark that started the fire, and Debut is the 2.0 version of the vision, fully realized.
