Sid Mashburn's Southern Style
Few men in America have the taste and style of Sid Mashburn. He’s a living legend, one of my modern style heroes, both in the way he dresses and lives. Perhaps it’s his predilection toward white pants - I’m blessed and cursed with the same gene - but he puts himself together in a way that merges the best elements of Southern and Southern Italian style. He has several uniforms - and their variations - he rotates that always look fresh yet are timeless in their fit and pattern, further proof that clothes are all.
I’ve wanted to order from Sid’s online shop for years, and look at it several times a week for style inspiration. Frequent impulse purchases have kept me from doing so, but the two pairs of pants he carries that I’ve had my eye on - the classic Levi’s 501 jean in white, and Mashburn’s garment-dyed Levi’s in Stone - are now mine. It’s a bit of a change from the raw denim I wear, but at under $100 each they’re a great way to spruce up style without putting down serious coin. If your budget allows, they’re also great pieces to buy multiples of.
Levi’s 501s have fallen from their heyday, but not at Sid Mashburn. Sid and his team started garment-dying and tapering 501 jeans several years back to recreate his favorite Stone color which was discontinued after the 1960s. The Stone shade is similar to a wheat jean, a creamy off-white with a hint of gray that pairs well with anything. The initial success of Sid’s Stone denim led the company to repeat this process with several other hues, including a British Khaki that looks downright rugged and an Air Force Blue that I’d swap my jeans out to wear on a daily basis.
Aside from his Levi’s, Sid Mashburn nails the other essentials as well. I had to stop myself from ordering a pair of his white five-pocket cords and Clark’s desert boots, a look inspired by both ‘60s prep and rugged Americana. Their shirting and trousers are on-point as well, and their suits are masterpieces for the price. For a guy who wants a tailored but classic suit, this is your place if Italian and English prices prove prohibitive. Also note how Sid and his team wear their suits and jackets, pairing classic colors with bright and patterned accessories - and oftentimes white denim or trousers.
If Sid Mashburn had a store in Minneapolis, I would be there twice a week and would go broke very fast. Until I spend more time in the South (they have six locations from Atlanta to Los Angeles to Washington D.C.) their online store will suffice, as will photos of Sid’s style as inspiration. Peep them - he dresses with verve that guys of any age would envy.
